First of all, for those who don't know the sf peninsula/bay area, Daly City is a pretty long-assed trek from central San Francisco. Thus, it would take something mighty special to get me to leave the womblike city to check it out. Especially if it meant having to go to Daly City. However, when San Francisco supergroup Wash Me puts on a show, regardless of location, convenience be damned. I'm there! When Wash Me calls, you gotta accept the charges! So, off I went, in search of the Cocktail Annex, getting lost only once along the way. Upon arrival, the "fabulous" Cocktail Annex, a cozy neighborhood bar full of regulars, cheesy booze-related kitsch and jubilant sports fans seemed, how shall I put this, an unlikely venue for Wash Me's special brand of hardcore lo-fi punk. To my surprise, however, the crowd proved not to be just merely witness to the subsequent house-rocking (as one might imagine a Daly City audience would be) they ended up active participants, mobbing the dancefloor, a few of the more belligerent drunks even started a mosh pit! After a set of inventive original songs inspired by video games, shitty jobs, bowling and arson, the crowd was whipped into a frenzy, begging for encores. Since all their original material had already been played, they ended up playing some excellent covers. Wash Me rocked the Cocktail Annex so thoroughly that my prejudiced assumption that Daly City was a city incapable of being rocked has been completely shattered. Thank you, Wash Me! |
