Foetus takes the Stage.

The club was sort of struggling to create the appropriate Foetal atmosphere, the smoke machine was barely adequate to fill the whole club, used to be the audiences' job to fill the club with smoke, but, well, no smoking. Foetus finally claimed the stage in white bellbottoms and a really scary 70's shirt, looking wiry and insane. He opened with the "hit" on 'FLOW', The Need Machine, not my favorite song from 'FLOW', but it's really energetic. Mighty Whitey and Your Salvation were thunderous and bombastic. And then, out of nowhere, a beautiful, emotional moment when Foetus sang a slow, moody cover of a Melvins song, "Mine is No Disgrace". I was totally captivated by this song and by the totally unexpected stirring visceral emotion of Thirlwell's performance.

As for classic Foetus, there were great performances of Throne of Agony and Anything (my teen anthem) from "NAIL". The crowd got all boisterous, slam dancing to Clothes Hoist and DI-1-9026 off of "HOLE". From the new album, Kreibabe and Mandelay were the ones I got the most excited about. The only drawback to this otherwise fantastic show was the crappy muddy sound, there were times when I couldn't discern the vocals at all. The whole point of seeing Foetus live is to hear him, you know? Since he's a solo studio musician, seeing him live with a band is always kind of weird, but he had a really good lineup, especially the guitarist. I'm just really glad that Foetus is back and more prolific than ever.
